Across The Plain

South Dakota's Boredom was killing me,

It was also killing my college friend, Doug.

We saw the world as a ballroom,

Together we set out to cut a rug!

The prairie was flat, never ending,

Snow made the plains mile after mile, white.

Day after day of long-distance traveling,

Seemed we slept in the same place each night.

Iowa, Minnesota, so many different people,

Packed inside a crowded Trail Ways bus…

We discovered more than different places:

Every person on Earth, was just like us.

Our goal was NOLA, Mardi Gras,

We stopped a thousand miles short.

When asked to describe the scenery,

We had only snow and Pheasants to report.

Drunk Enough to See the Stars

Sometimes one must journey,

Into the darkness ever so far

Away from another man’s house lights,

Just to witness a falling star.

One night I heard the calling

To observe this heavenly show,

I needed to clear recent knowledge

Of things I wish I didn’t know.

I gathered up a jug of wine,

I hit the high beach trail…

I walked into the sunset,

My ship was ready to sail.

I sat at the top of the hillside,

Against an old worn Cedar tree.

Staring out into the darkness

Under the Cosmos to be free.

I watched a million stars that night

The sky was clear, no clouds or rain.

I realized walking home at dawn

My heart and mind were free again.
