Winter Resistance

The days grow short and darker,

Rain puddles turn to icy frost…

I hate descending into winter…

So, I hide, pretending to be lost.

The warm electric mattress pad,

Is my anti-chill padlock.

I remain a warm happy lizard,

Basking on my very own hot rock.

While I hide under the covers,

That serve as anti-winter guards,

My master searches the kitchen…

He is freezing and craving carbs.

Pendulums

So many people I have known,

Had serious issues over time…

Their behavior like a pendulum,

Repeatedly crossed some sacred line.

Each back and forth marked a second,

Sixty clicks equaled one minute…

If the clock retains a memory,

This is my 65^th year within it.

A pre-digital analogue sentinel,

Reminded me to walk the dog…

The clock announced the school bus,

While building next year’s travelogue.

Now I hear in the dark of night,

The reaper’s quarter hour chime…

The pendulum is stealing minutes,

From future hours left of mine.

 

My Past Homes

All the homes where I once lived,

Were financed by different lenders,,,

The houses repainted by new owners,

Now refurbished with newer timbers.

I wonder if they feel connections,

Involving any of the house’s history…

Do any of the neighbor’s memories

Unravel any legend or mystery?

They will never know the calving

On Christmas eve facing certain harm…

Or a 7^th grade neighbor’s smoking,

Burnt down our original barn.

They’ll never hear the grand piano

Playing nighty by the pond..

Entertaining the whole family:

Horses, geese and wildlife, far beyond.

They will never get the morning paper,

Beneath roosting pheasants in the trees,

Or smell the rotting carp in summer,

In the sweltering summer breeze.

John Boy, the greatest cat ever,

Has a grave forever unknown…

Next to the bluest Parakeet,

The bravest budgie ever flown.

I hope all future owners,

Feel a sense of the magic there…

I discovered years ago,

This best spot on the hemisphere.
