Nomadic Dream

I am almost in a wheelchair,
Still I have the nomad’s dream…
Wanting to circle the planet,
Alongside every peaceful stream.

I want to avoid the cities,
The pollution and the people…
The politics and the religion,
Every capitol and steeple.

I want to witness the kindness,
The impoverished have to give,
Interview the dying elders,
Why they have the will to live.

I want to ask the nomads,
As they continue to roam.
Is the world such a wonderful place,
Or do they long to find a home?

Exploring the world on foot,
Is also a search for me.
Can rambling thoughts inside our heads,
Ever allow us to be free?

Road Rash

I remember falling off my skates,
And my bicycle on hot asphalt…
The pain was not just physical,
But an emotional assault.

My skin scraping off on concrete,
Tearing down to expose the bone…
Was no less painful than growing old
And having to leave my home.

Rolling the Map

My future’s proving the earth is round.
I am nearing where I began…
Returning to a space I shared
With a friend from way back when.

There must have been a crease on the map,
Where I stumbled on a fold…
I’m moving back to familiar haunts
Before I was ever this old.

Thirty years on a beautiful island,
I’m now leaving this paradise…
Hoping in my heart of hearts,
One can find Nirvana twice.

May Storm

Oh, did you hear the storm last night?
It woke me from anxious dreams…
I wondered if the sea would flood
The island with new born streams.

Conrad didn’t seem to care.
“Did I hear it”? He said “Nah”.
He turned in bed to face me,
Grabbing my arm with his paw.

Most people now turned seventy,
Will overlook an indifferent friend…
No matter their lack of attention,
They’ll stand by you till the end.

Relationships have trade offs,
Conrad tolerates my inane wit…
He knows at 3 AM this morning,
I’ll take him out for another shit.

Addicted to Beauty

I’ve always been addicted to beauty,
Be it a sunset, a soul, or one word
Sometimes it was a person’s smile,
Or the best music ever heard.

I started to buy oil paintings,
Then Asian object’s d’ art…
Then clever new inventions,
And this was just the start.

I filled my house with goodies,
Then expanded to three stores.
I still made a fair profit,
Paying others to work the floors.

Then suddenly,

My skeleton failed,
I no longer had my health.
My priorities were just breathing
There was no value in wealth.
