I learned the mashed Potato
I Jerked to Twist and Shout
Now at fifty years of age,
What was that all about?
I memorized most every word
Of every verse and song,
Ignoring basic living skills
Where did the dance go wrong…
Did the Pony, Skate and disco thing
The Macarena and Frug too!
I swayed the Bosa Nova,
In a light fluorescent blue.
I got no satisfaction
From the Pony or Twine Time,
But took a walk on the wild side.
And slow-danced mighty fine.
I B-Bopped and Hip-hopped,
I rocked around the clock.
Dizzy from the saxophones
In suede shoes newly chalked.
I‘d skate an OK moon walk
And even did the splits…
Others imitated me
The Drumbeat never quits!
With swallowed pride I Jitterbugged,
And even learned the Fly,
I tape recorded Disco Duck
And gave the “scene” a try!
I loved to do the Monkey,
Held my nose and did the Swim
I cut my hair like Ringo Starr
And wore a Dick Clark grin.
I did the Locomotion
In skin-tight Levi pants.
I hated Yoko Ono,
But still gave peace a chance.
I see it all so clearly now,
The false pride and vanity,
Trapped within my vinyl world,
Sock-hop insanity.
