Nearing the End

Nearing the final chapter,
I’m entertaining so many thoughts…
People, pets, old memories,
Tasting fresh picked apricots.

I often have recurring questions
What will I miss the most?
I’ve had the best of everything,
Life’s been a most generous host.

In the end it won’t be money,
Or all the booze I've chugged…
My greatest takeaway memories,
Will be all the pets I’ve hugged.

Whidbey Island Snow Birds

Whidbey Island Snowbirds,
Set their alarm clocks for November
Leaving the island for Arizona
For the daylight they remember.

Those of us still on the island,
Observe the only spark…
Igniting the furnace pilot light,
At 4:00 PM when dark.

But Wait! My Arizona friends,
Are wearing coats under the desert moon…
It seems their trip to Nirvana,
Arrived two weeks too soon.

The Yearning Never Fades

I wake up in the middle of the night,
Your arm around me like before…
There are so many dreams and faces now,
I can’t recall your name anymore.

Were you the one who loved me,
Or the fantasy in a bar…
In my dreams you spent two decades,
Or at least ten minutes in my car.

I think about all the hotties,
Still I focus on one or two…
I can’t remember any names,
But I’ll always remember you.
