Silent Morning

Sometimes age may dictate changes,

You obey the signs and do not cry,

There are so many different directions,

Yet few available options to try.

Denial can’t make smart decisions,

You succumb to accepting your fate.

Relatives make the harsh decisions,

Designing a safer life out of state.

I suddenly remembered today,

I used to live on an island…

In a house on a cliff by the water,

With a view and orchard I walked in.

I recall tossing the keys on the floor

Closing the door, that very last morning…

Boarding the ferry for one last time,

To commence my silent mourning.

New Horizons

When life becomes too dangerous,

To continue living alone,

There comes a time when common sense

Says it’s time to leave your home.

Time brings on many changes,

Often reported as breaking news.

I ‘ve relocated to another state,

Sporting different ocean views.

Tonight’s weather sets off alarms,

Fog horns and the buoy bell,

May be winds, high surf or calm seas,

Here it’s way too soon to tell.

The Coast Guard Flies a square black flag,

Their most dire weather Warning…

Demanding the boats to stay at sea

And out of the harbor till morning.

Sadly, there’s a growing monument,

Saluting the lost fishermen…

Who reported to work as usual,

And never came home again.

Different Altitudes

A thousand feet below my lair,

Noisy tourists fill the town…

While in the lofty foggy air,

Hummingbirds gather around.

The Hummers meet with nervous cheeps,

As car drivers toot their horn…

Tourists have no respect for themselves,

Or any of the wildlife being born.

The whales corralled by sightseer boats,

Are held captive, eating their krill.

The species struggling in the wild,

Don’t know the peace above town, I feel.

The flustered fauna when frightened,

Have very few places to hide…

Whereas I can simply enter the house,

Lock the door and stay inside.
