Inheriting a Lifetime

Some people’s life is awaiting
The arrival of their girl or boy…
Mine, the bequest of a poetry file;
Today was a heartbreaking leap for joy.

Betty Freund had a brilliant mind,
Now sadly, she’s passed away…
She collected her life's favorite poems,
Her daughter gave me her folder today.

It’s always uncanny when best friends
Collect poets with similar names…
But stranger yet when the poems,
Are often one in the same.

Loss

Crushed by life’s unfairness,
Crippled from staggering grief…
I miss the arms of comforting lies
One loses with disbelief.

I am thankful we took the photograph
In front of our house back then…
A proof of our existence, where
We’ll never both visit again.

When He Spoke to Me in Dreamland

When he spoke to me in dreamland,
I awoke remembering what I heard…
His voice, so painfully familiar,
I held on to every word:

“Well, I can tell you one thing”, he snarled,
“In fact, he added, I’ll tell you two!
Beware your time is fleeting…
Amend your narrow world view”.

“You dwell upon the past times,
Worship friends who have passed away…
While you dread possible losses tomorrow,
You have squandered away today. “

I never have believed in ghosts,
Still, I’ve heard your wisdom spoken…
More honest than I’ve lived my life
While explaining dreams I’ve broken.
